The novel takes place in 1867. Mathias Sandorf and his two friends planned actions for the independence of Hungary from the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The Austrian police discover them, capture them in Trieste and take them by carriage to Istria. They were placed in prison. They were accused of conspiracy. They are tried and sentenced to death. Mathias Sandorf manages to escape with one friend. They reach another location in Istria by underground river, then walk to an Istrian town on the coast. They meet a local fisherman, board his boat and escape by sea.
